Opinions: Tascam 238 _amp; Tascam 688

Looking for opinions on the Tascam 238 and Tascam 688... I have search the archives, but only found a few hits.

I am aware of the feature/design differences (688 has built-in mixer)... I am looking more for opinions about recording quality, ease of use, degradtion of signal quality when bouncing tracks...etc..

I have heard that the tape mechanism is common to both units, can anyone confirm this?

Looking to use for home recording fun!... not really expecting pro quality, but don't want junk either.
