My former partner and I would schedule about 2 weeks for laying tracks, usually 6 to 8 tunes. Already rehearsed to death, some minor changes, then it's off. The session drummer would come in and we all would lay down the basic stuff. The advantage of that was to get a universal sound. Main instruments like piano, bass, electric _ acoustic guitar etc. Then after that stuff was cut, drummer gone, we started the fill, vocals, orchestral stuff, then solo's back up's etc. The nice thing about working that way was proficiancy, less cumbersome, everything was where it was supposed to be on the console, and on the tracks. Then we would spend some real time on mixing and mastering. It was hard between work, and families. But we pulled it off, and it sounded great. No party's till it was over. About 10 hrs a day for 2 solid week's including week-ends.
