Multi-Instramentalist time juggling

Any solo multi-instrumentalist recording folk? I'd be interested to hear your strategies and experiences in attempting to maintain/improve the level of playing multiple instruments for recording projects, with just a small amount of time available.

Last year I finally abdandoned trying to keep up/improve skills on drums/guitar/clarinet/keyboards all year round. I decided on a particular recording project with roughly a one year duration. I left all my instruments and just worked on the material for a couple of months. Then started practising the drums only, for a month, until I got some tightness back, and recorded all the drum tracks. I haven't touched the drums since. I then practised guitar only for a month and recorded all the guitars etc. you get the idea.

While this is the only way I think I can get decent performances recorded, it has had its down side. I'm now coming to the end of the year, just finishing off the last recordings, heading into mixing. But my patience was wearing thin during keyboard recording, because it's been so long without any end product, and I was starting to accept adequate but not great performances just to make progress.

Please tell me of your similar or contrasting experiences...

Ian
