Mac or PC? SCSI or IDE?
This is for PC:
I bet its a master/slave problem. Make the new one master (little switch on the HD, check the manual) and the old one slave. Boot. Watch the screen, there should be something like: 'Press F1 to enter BIOS Setup'. Go to BIOS, be careful. Check for IDE stuff and put everything on AUTO if possible'. If you feel unsure what you're doing, ask someone who knows they're way around computers. Offer him a sixpack AFTER he's done tweaking.
TIP: I always back-up on CD-RW, then when a projects finished on CD-R, CD-ROM Drives are cheap these days (cheap compared to losing your work) and you don't really need the newest and fastest drives.
