A little bit of confusion here. Do you mean compressing while tracking vs. compressing at mixdown? Or compressing during recording AND mixdown vs. compressing the final mix? My opinion is that the artist/mixing dude/producer, should do what ever it takes to make each song what they want and not worry about mastering until the entire project is mixed. Then, if you're doing the mastering yourself, compress if and where needed. If you're sending it out to be mastered, don't worry about compressing your final mixes if you're happy with them. Not a clear cut answer, sorry. I guess my main point is that you should try to get the best mix you can. If it means compressing, compress away! p.s. I think there's a misnomer out there that compressing is the main thing done in mastering. It can be. Sometimes EQ is. Sometimes riding faders is. Depends on the program material.
