: This year we will be purchasing a PC for our home. Needless to say, besides home finances, word processing, e-mail, internet access and games, I want to use it for recording. I have read the articles by Dan and Eddie on this site, but I am still foggy on what I will need to have a whole home recording setup on PC.Let's say I get a big fast PC with tons of mem and a CD burner. Can anyone point me to a source that can guide, in detail, a beginner through this process? I guess my trouble is I see all these products and don't get what all they do. There's $300 soundcards, there's $800 soundcard/recorders(?), there's outboard converters and interfaces, there's all that damn software, can my 4 track still be of service, etc. Cost of PC aside, let's say I was looking to spend $1000 on a set-up I could grow into and add to. Is that reasonable? Recommendations? Is that $1000 in addition to the computer? If so, $1000 gets you some serious DAW. Like the articles state, you need to decide what your needs are and go from there. Unless you plan on doing lots of tracking at once, you could probably get by with only 4 in/out plus digital in/out. Most cards come with some sort of stripped down software. CEP LE(SE) seems to be pretty popular among card manufacturers. In my opinion you need 3 types of audio software. Multitracking, editing, and sequencing. Some programs such as Cubase VST, Audio Logic Platinum Pro, and Cakewalk Pro Audio, encompass those 3 types. I use my 4 tracker as a front end to my PC. Sometimes it's quicker and easier to track to the 4 tracker and then mix and edit on the PC if I'm not too concerned about quality. Tracking to DAW can be a pain sometimes because you have to deal with latency, monitoring/duplex issues, HD space/performance, etc. hope some of that helps!
