Ummm, ya, income varies. It's not like being an engineer for Boeing where there is a set salary for the position. Audio engineering varies widely. Basically whatever you ask for and negotiate is what you get paid. If you start your own studio you get paid whatever is left after costs. If you freelance... well that's a whole different scenario. If you work in someone else's studio then they pay you whatever. It really really all depends. I'm sure there are engineers at tiny studios who make $20k a year and engineers at studios owned by a major label that make $100k+ a year. Some studio startups make negative money their first few years! Some freelance producer/engineers make over $1 million a year in royalties & straight fees. See, no easy answer to this one.
