How is your sound card routed? Is sounds like you have your output routed through the input on your mixer somewhere and don't have a separate buss to keep the signals apart. For me, it got to the point where I used a tape machine as a headphone amp for monitoring while tracking and used my mixer for the actual recording and it worked pretty well (other than that I'm using a 30lb tape deck for a headphone amp.
