Hi Carl,
I bought a R8 + MTC1 1990 and sold them 1994. The R8 is a great taperecorder and the MTC1 does it job pretty good. The only problem is just that it is pretty hard to get the MTC1 to work for the first time, and that´s because the manual is really hard to understand. The language of the MTC1 manual really sucks! If XP50 is able to understand SMPTE then it should not be any problem to sync the XP50 with R8 and MTC1. I used the R8 synced to Cubase on a Macintosh Classic wich worked fine.
If i don’t remember completely wrong thi is how i used to work, just to show you one way to work with it:
1. Record and edit all midi stuff in Cubase.
2. Connect midi out from the keyboard to midi in on MTC1
3. Use a combination of keys on the keyboard to tell the MTC1 to start to send SMPTE code to the R8. Wich keys to be pressed is written somewhere in the manual.
4. Record the SMPTE code on channel 8 on R8. Check that there is a cable from MTC1 to R8 channel 8 input.
5. When the SMPTE code is recorded from beginning to end on the tape, then connect midi out from MTC1 to midi in on Macintosh.
6. With a combination of keys on the keyboard i told the MTC1 to start recieving SMPTE code from R8’s channel 8 output.
7. Back to cubase and do tell it on wich numbers (SMPTE) Cubase should start to play.
8. If everything worked fine i should just have to press play on R8 and then Cubase started to play in sync.As you can see i used R8 as master and Cubase as slave.
The hardest part is to set the dip switches right and to get it to work for the first time. But when you get it to work it works just great. My advice is that you try to read the manual for the MTC1 (yeah i know it’s a pain) and try to understand how it works. If you have more question i will try to help you, but i’m not sure i remember everything about the MTC1.
Good luck and don’t give up!
