just a couple of points...
"The other thing is that if the group wasn't in
tune or some people in the group were spoiling
it ... how are you going to correct for that?
If it's a choir....."auto tune wasn't for this project... it's for several others that I am cutting vox for. Auto tune as you stated isn't much good with multiple pitches.
"The issue about regrouping (if possible) is the
obvious solution (re: DUHHHH!) but I HAVE HAD TO
DO THAT BEFORE and even though you apologize
profusely for it ... you get the RIGHT thing
on tape as you intended to the first time."but still, sometimes it's just not feasible.
"Its humiliating, and unprofessional
to hand a tape to a client which is recorded
poorly and I personally would rather refund all
thier money and apologize than give them a
recording which doesn't show them at thier best -
or worse display my own issues controlling the
gear!"Ouch! First off, in my situation, they're not paying. Second, my "control issues" with the equipment were, uhh, out of my control. My ADAT was placed where I couldn't see it very well at all during the performance or obviously- and this should be painfully obvious- i'd have corrected the problem if I would've had the opportunity. Same goes for Percy- he wasn't even at the controls of his gear when his situation occured. Also, in my situation, I was able to correct the problem acceptably "in the mix" as we've said, otherwise I wouldn't have given them a CD. And for what it's worth, they loved it- including one guy that worked in the choral music department(?) at Notre Dame- and he compared my stuff to lots of other recordings of choral music in his collection.
"You stake your reputation on your output to the
public. Would you actually consider sending
out a recording which you "fixed up" just to make
it to a SUB-T project? I would have a little
more pride in my work to not release it unless
it *totally* fit my vision for the final product."Well, since this Sub-T project's theme is "live" recording then I guess that makes it tricky to get a good recording- I know that many of you have suggested recording "live in the studio" but frankly, that's not really what I think of when I think of "live".
Do you think Frampton's "Alive" album would've ever come out if someone had held it to the standard of studio recordings? Queen's "Live Killers"? Journey's "Captured"? Or better yet- Aerosmith's "Live Bootleg"! The difference between "live" and not live is that you don't get multiple chances. That's "live". The challenge in live recording is to get the best recording you can and sweeten it as much as possible.
I appreciate you $.02, and just want folks to understand there's another side to that story.
