I do high school bands on the side and just picked up my 4th band. The all have their concerts at around the same time and it's inevitable that sooner or later I'm going to have 2 on the same night. As far as a person to cover one of them, I have that worked out but will need another pair of mikes. Right now I have a pair of AKG c1000's which work ok and I use them at home for acoustic guitar and some vocals. A great multipurpose mic if I do say so. Anyway I'm thinking of the SM81 for the second pair. A definite step up in price but certainly worth it as nobody else around here does the high school band concerts, which I record for free but I get the CD concession. Steve S's valuable mic table indicates that the 81 is good for orchestra and acoustic guitar. I do recall though, some time ago that someone, Mr. Blonde maybe, stated that they were not good on acoustic guitar. There is a question here. I know they will be great to record the bands but are they good on acoustic guitar and do they have any use for vocals. BTW, if some of you have the capabilty to record and duplicate CD's for high school bands you might want to consider it. It's nice to make money with our equipment rather than just spend it. If you are interested in looking into this, email me for details or if you think it would make a good article on how to get started, I'd be willing to write it up just let me know.
