Actually, my hearing is semi-shot already and I'm not quite in my 50s.

I think by the time I was 30 my hearing would roll off
at 12 or 13k. However, if I have nothing to do with
music for a few weeks, it comes back a little.
I still don't believe that most stuff coming through
the console sounds that overly bright or
harsh, i think it's
stage bleed that's doing that. I haven't had a lot
to do with mixing big venues, but have definitely
played a few (never over 3000 people or so),
so my perspective is like this: the guy mixing
house is trying to bring up a lead guitar, the show
is half over, and HE STILL HASNT' FIGURED OUT THAT
THE SNARE DRUM IS BLEEDING INTO THE GUITAR MIC
LOUDER THAN THE GUITAR IS, SO THE STUPID SHIT, WHO
QUIT CARING YEARS AGO, IS BRINGING UP THE SNARE INSTEAD.
I finally permanently solved
that problem with half of my output going to 2 or 4
stacks, and the other half going to a custom made 2x12
pointing Away from the drummer.
I guess I'm on a wrong track here anyway, I was
referring to studio only, live venues have all sorts
of problems that would go away if egos would go
away and IQs would raise. Studios have some of the
same problems but not nearly as bad, except they
need a better product so maybe it equals out.
