it depends on what you're doing. If you're going for a true stereo sound like the way people hear it, you should set the diaphragms of the mics about 6" apart & face them in different directions (like this /\ or at a greater angle). Then hard pan them to each side. This will give a natual stereo sound without a lot of phasing problems. I use this method for all my stereo mic configurations. It's called B-ear configuration (pronounced beer). It's designed to mimic human perception of sound. That's not the only way to do it of course but it seems to work best for ambient stereo applications like drum overheads & stereo guitar micing.
