First of all, I will admit that I dont know anything about the Tascam 85/16 machine, but I know the basics of sync. First, the tape player will be your master machine since I doubt it can have it's speed controled by an external machine, and the macintosh will be the slave. The dumbest unit is always the master. Second, you are going to need to stripe LTC (SMPTE) to the 16th track of your tape. The track really doesnt matter, but the 16th is hopefully out of the way of other tracks to prevent bleed. Also, dont print the timecode too hot because it wreaks havok as far as it will create more potential for bleed. Try maybe -5db. Then, the LTC signal needs to go to a timecode converter, which will read the SMPTE and convert it to MTC (MIDI timecode) for your mac to read. That is a serial cable to and from your mac from the converter. If you also have an external A/D converter that you use, you can hook the word clock from the converter to the word clock input of the A/D. I think that is how all this should go. If I got any of this wrong, please feel free for anyone to correct me. Good luck.
