I have been a musician for 20 years (saxophone) and have recorded in the studio often, but when it comes to recording gear and home recording I'm a complete novice. I am thinking about buying the Tascam 424MKIII, but have several questions that maybe someone can answer here. Aside from having a handy songwriting tool, I want to be able to record a demo live in my home. Questions:
1. If I am recording a six-piece band live (saxophone, vocal, piano, guitar, bass, drums), would I be able to do it with this machine and have it come out sounding decent? How? If possible, I would like to have separate mics for the vocal and saxophone.
2. How many tracks are available on this machine to do later overdubbing, if any? For example, if I record live to four-tracks, would I be able to add additional parts later? The machine is advertised as an 8 channel mixer with 6 full input channels. What does that mean exactly? (see, I'm a total idiot)
3. I'm assuming the machine has no effects. Do I need them? If so, what would be easy to use and not too much dough?I like the idea of a recorder that will sound good but is simple to use and not too complicated or expensive. I appreciate any input from those in the know.
Thanks...
