Not trying to get into the analog vs. digital thing again, but... I can't let this one lie!

The medium it was recorded to WILL make a difference, but this is not to say that you CAN'T achieve the same results on digital. The "haze" is what we're putting in with our compressors, tube pre's, etc- basically it's harmonic distortion. There are even plugins that simulate this- Magneto, for one- and I betcha you'd be hard pressed to tell whether something was recorded digitally or on analog when digital gear is PROPERLY used (conversely, i've heard analog recordings that you'd never believe they're NOT digital). This is one of the biggest bum raps digital gets all the time: you CAN'T do this or you CAN'T do that. I'm here to tell you that you CAN! A big part of the "problem" with digital is that we've spent the first 20 years of the "digital revolution" learning how to use it. Now all we have to do is DO IT! And try not to fall victim of the "I CAN'T" or "it's impossible" syndrome.

Having said that, i'll venture that the other links in the recording chain- the bass itself, the amp, the preamp, the speaker, the compressor, etc make more difference sonically than the medium it's recorded to although i'm willing to concede that that has a little something to do with it as well. Probably could add that possibly the density of the air in the room, or the sound of the room had something to do with it as well. :)
