Direct sucks. Your best bet is some sort of amp modeler/simulator. I've had great results getting Fender clean tones with the Sansamp stuff. Compression and good reverb really help too. What's your pickup setup? Middle and neck single coils work well. Neck humbuckers are good if you roll off the low end a bit.
