60 cycle hum?

I started a thread below and got a lot of help regarding my taping of teachings (spoken word) with my portable 4track and a lavalier-type mic. But now I've got a problem.

The lavalier has a belt pack, where the XLR connects, and has a battery and a 3-position switch. Off/on/rolloff.

I have been using it in the ON position, but tried the rolloff position last time. It was a critical teaching, and I was extremely disappointed to find that there was a loud hum on the tape. This has never happened before. Do you think it could be that there is a problem with the rolloff position? Or do you think it might have been coincidence, and that something else went wrong? I don't want it to happen again.

Part 2:
I tried to minimize the hum when "mixing down" (not much of a mixing when you're going from a mono signal to mono left and right!) by cutting frequencies on a graphic EQ, but it's still too bad. Any other suggestions?
