A little compression narrows the (peak to average ratio) resulting in a louder average program. Compression reduces dynamic range. Most cd, vinyl, music is compressed especially cassetts almost all FM ,AM , and television broadcasts are compressed. Commercials are heavily compressed. Re: Sample, If you indeed sampled yourself, look at the loop, reduce the peaks that are causing the harshness. If you have an expander(another subject entire) set the controls to shave off the initial attack then add some compression to even it out. It should sound ssSSSmoother.
