To my ears, Yes, Alice Cooper, John Entwhistle, and Kiss have bass sounds on the verge of breakup-I think they run their rigs on the virge of breakup. I recently read an article about Kiss recording Psycho Circus (EQ mag I think), and that engineer said they miked Gene's rig and used a DI-maybe the bass Sansamp. One thing I distinctly remember is he said the sound of the SVT miked by itself was ugly, like it was breaking up. They mixed that with the DI. Maybe try running your amp pretty hard, mic it, and mix a DI signal. That could be a starting point. I'd use some low mid (250-600, I'm not very good at frequency guessing, but I think it is in that range) at the amp or on your recorded signal. I know John Entwhistle and Geddy have a nice top end, but Alice Cooper seems really low mid based to me. That's my best guess.
