Maybe it is the amps they use. Is there a particuar artist or song for an example? When I think of 70's, I think Sun and Acoustic (I wasn't there, I'm just thinking of pictures I've seen). I think modern amps, guitar and bass, have less lower mid than older amps. Are you listening to records? Maybe vinyl recordings have that bass sound. Could be tape saturation or their older preamps. I think Lenny Kravitz gets that sound. Maybe check into his setup. Just some ideas.
