What I do for small live stuff is just use VHS where you don't have to worry about clipping. But I imagine the MD is easier to set up than a VHS machine & preamps. What I'd do is a sound check for each instrument. play each instrument channel as loud as you can and set the levels just high enough that it doesn't clip. & yes, it's a good recommendation to save any processing for after. I know I process live to tape often but when you only have 1 shot at the recording, it's best to play it safe.
