kick mic problem

I have run into a sort of confusing situation. I just picked up an AKG D112 kick drum mic and started to do some recording of drums (D112 through mackie 1202 preamp into Akai DPS12 hard disk recorder). When the drummer kit the kick very hard, it was real "squashed" sounding and kind of harsh (my other kick mic AT pro 25 does not react this way). Nothing is peaking, or distorting. I bypassed the Mackie pre and used the preamp built into the Akai-much better, but still sometimes it has that same sound. Do I need a better preamp since I have a "better" kick mic? Maybe this mic is broken? Any info is appreciated, cause I'm pretty stumped. thanks
