I use VHS for mixdown too and have never had any problems. Some things to look out for though. #1 make sure you record on SP mode not EP or LP. Make sure you're using Hi-Fi mode only and not linear or mix. Some VCRs don't allow Hi-Fi only and one way to test if your machine is this way is to record white noise (just tune in to a blank radio station & record it if you don't have any noise generators). Record in EP mode and on playback, listen for phase shifts. Those are caused by the Hi-Fi & linear tracks being in different places on the tape so little inconsistancies become exaggerated. Also, your noise level should be lower than -80 so if you can hear any noise and your VCR is set right, it's probably your preamps, mics, guitar amps etc. Another thing that may help is record your levels as loud as you can to VHS. Hi-Fi doesn't saturate the tape like linear does so +6 input level should cause no distortion. Compensate by turning your record level on the computer down.
Oh, make sure you're recording in 16bit or more on the computer. It may sound stupid to say this but some soundcards will fool you into thinking it's record or playback is 16 bit but software peoblems may cause it to actually record or play back in 8 bit.
Hope that helps
