In regards to placement, I think you're right. The room is now covered in "trailer park wood-grain" (as is the rest of the basement). I don't so much mind the "reflectivity" to some degree, but in a room that small, sound just kind of goes all over. Pretty messy.
It's kind of funny how something is so obvious when you know it, but before that it just glides right by your grey matter.
