It makes sense that the absorption works best behind the mic/vocalist, because that's the direction the mic is pointing. Similarly, I do my vocals/acoustic guitars with a couch and a futon piled behind me; there's little need to worry about reflections from in front. In your very small room, however, I would suggest placing another panel on one side, so two walls are more live, two more dead, none reflecting directly back at each other.
