You always hear "People get the government they deserve" and it's absolutely no different when it comes to capitalism. Yeah, artists are signing their freaking lives away, and somehow think that it'll be worth it. But it's that way for everything. I heard this bank commercial that says "Most banks treat you like a number and then charge you to use your own money. Don't they know that if you don't like their service, you can walk?" So tell me--when was the last time you 'walked' on your bank because you didn't like their policies? Don't we all buy popcorn and cokes at the movies even though we know it's a tremendously bad deal? How many of you LEASE your car? We could do away with all of these shitty deals if only we refused to do business their way. The internet community did it with spam and per minute usage fees. We didn't like unsolicited email in our inboxes, we got pissy early on, and the big-bucks industries followed our lead. More than anything else business wants OUR MONEY. They'll do whatever they have to do to get it. And yet we only occasionally use that fact to our advantage. And so--we get what we deserve.

I think that part of the big label/bad contract problem is that all these artists are young, and I'm sure the labels like it that way. I'd bet that most of these kids that sign contracts haven't even learned how to stand up to their own parents, let alone the people who are promising them their fantasy, gift-wrapped and hand-delivered. They think it's going to be OK. After all, all of their adolescent idols must have signed these contracts too, so how bad could it be?

If you want things to change, you've got to convince people (including ourselves) that we DO have the power to change. That's ok to question authority, challenge the status quo, and to STAND UP FOR OURSELVES. And for each other, by the way.

Easy to say, not so easy to pull off.

Jack
