Snip from Bolts: "I would love, LOVE to see the music industry status quo toppled by things like online, independent, direct distribution of music. It's right, it's healthy, it's a beautiful thing, and it will be great when the sonic quality is improved. Unfortunately, I can't see this happening without the majors wiping their stain all over it. The only way they wouldn't is if they couldn't find the profit in it, and if the artists were willing to work for much less. I don't know, too much coffee this morning, what do you think?"
Oh no, you asked! Well I work on making this sort of thing a reality daily so I've seen exactly *why* things are the way they are and not the way they aren't. It's not really necessary to "topple" the status quo, just ignore it as non-existent.
The problem lies with artists, not with record labels. Record labels do what they do and get away with it because artists allow it. Artists take the position (voluntarily) of powerless, struggling, gimmie gimmie wannabees. They then take anything they can get and give away all their rights. They voluntarily becomes the music industry's employees rather than the employer. Money ALWAYS goes to the employer in the USA. They realize at no time that they actually hold all the cards... being that they are the source. Record labels just put deals they know are shitty out there, I'm sure they are always surprised that most artists actually bite! An artists just snaps up the shity deal and eagerly signs it. At no time does the feebly minded artist think of writing a deal and having the record label sign that!
When an artist is presented a set of options... invest in your own band, become your own employer, and work... or become someone else's employee, have them do everything for you, have them also take all the money... well guess what, all artists choose option B cause it looks like the easy way.
So, again, I'm 100% for indie artists not recognizing the existence of record labels. I work to this goal every single day. But I know... and every single giant record label knows... that it's ALL, 100 FUCKING PERCENT IN THE ARTIST'S HANDS... and they just don't have the balls for it. Sorry, that's existential heart of it, and it's too bad.
The conclusion is that major label slavery will continue. No matter what wonder-technology comes about, there's never a free ticket, it always requires work, the rewards therefore go to the ones that are up to DO that work... those people are corporation employees, NOT indie artists.
