i have had great results for rock(and otherwise)guitar with ribbon mics.
try recording with a ribbon,a 57, and something like a 4033 or a senheiser 409 all pushed right up on th speaker cab.go back in and lsten to each one and then combos of all of them. my favorite heavy guitar mic is the rca bk5...
