This helps make my old point about Lars/Metallica, with whom Courtney says she empathizes: when you're being fiscally raped by your own record company, why holler at the thing that gets your music to the kids directly? Again, I understand the legality, I just think the handling of the issue threw the whole thing in a bad light.

Courtney also talks about the "works for hire" provision (which I mentioned a while back in the Music Forum on this site) as happening in the "dead of night;" the fact is, no artists besides Don Henley seemed to give a crap about this while it was happening. What, was the record company supposed to memo the artists about this? Whose responsibility was it to be informed?

In this day and age, with a modicum of self-education, you have to know what the ramifications are to a major-label deal. Your sole reason for existing as an artist on a major label is to make them money. They don't care whether you make money. I'm happy to hear someone at Courtney Love's "level" (even if it is her!) say that she's willing to part with the trappings of fame in order to share her music directly with her fans. I wonder how many other artists in her position would say the same? I would love, LOVE to see the music industry status quo toppled by things like online, independent, direct distribution of music. It's right, it's healthy, it's a beautiful thing, and it will be great when the sonic quality is improved. Unfortunately, I can't see this happening without the majors wiping their stain all over it. The only way they wouldn't is if they couldn't find the profit in it, and if the artists were willing to work for much less. I don't know, too much coffee this morning, what do you think?
