I am in the same situation as you. Since i couldnt afford proper monitors i invested in a pair of AKG 240 headphones wich are kind of standard in many studios. In combination with my homemade monitors they work pretty good to mix with those. The only drawback i can think of is that they leak pretty much in to the mic when i use them and record vocals.
