Hey dude, DO NOT GO FOR THE LOW END STUFF if you can
buy very good medium stuff for the same $$ used.
For $500 you could easily get one and maybe two (each
with two channels)(I don't know what area of the country you are in
so it varies) Valley Dyn-o-mites. You could
probably also get about 3 channels of Allison Research
Gain Brain's
for that amount--used. There are some Urei's that
go for about $200/channel used but I don't remember
the part #, I think it is 7110. You may also be able
to get a couple of "Orban" stereo units for that price
(although they are more geared toward broadcast
they do the job quite well, but it some areas of the
country they are quite expensive even used, I think a couple
of the model #s are 418A and 424A.) Unfortunately
I cannot recommend any dbx stuff except the 165 and
the original 160, and a couple other ones they
made that are WAY too much money. Although I believe
you are better off with dbx than the Alesis.
Oh, drawmer made one limiter/gate (I think the part
# had a 300 in it), that doesn't go for too much
used and it is a pretty good one, but probably
too rare to find on demand.

3 times I owned limiters that were substandard
and 3 times I was pissed off until I sold them.
They were the Alesis, the CAD, and I believe a
yamaha. But there was no one there to tell me
these units were not blessed with plenty
(or even close) of headroom.
OK, don't all you guys write me hate mail cause
I slammed a couple lo-end audio things. Have a nice
day.
