Makes sense. Man, if you could get those vox tracks in the computer you could fix them in a skinny minute even without compression.
I usually crush the beejesus out of the bass track when tracking, much to the chagrin of every bassist that I ever told about it. I've yet to see one notice that i'm doing it if I don't tell them, they just get pissed when I do. Generally, the better the bassist, the less compression he'll need. I usually go for 3-4:1 at around 6db or less of reduction. More reduction for myself, and a lot less for a talented bassist.
I only gently compress vox, and compress them more with software if the mix demands it.
I also nearly always compress guitar mics while tracking- around 4:1 and -4 to -6db.
Drums I compress as a problem solver, only.
