Go to http://www.fmraudio.com/, home of the RNC1773 compressor. This compressor is better than anything you'll find under $1000, probably better than most compressors under $2000, and it only costs $199! I've heard of people buying them for as low as $170 through other sources like Mercenary Audio. Go to Deja.com and do a search on the Really Nice Compressor and you will find raving reviews about it. I have one and LOVE it. I heard Willie Nelson bought 24 for his home studio. As far as bang for the buck this is probably the greatest piece of equipment ever.
PS. Alesis compressors sound like crap.
