Not so good. I tried FSK with my Yammy MT8x. Problem with FSK is that it offers only speed-synchronization and still absolutely NO timecode refrence whatsoever. And the lock ain't all that great, which is a good and bad thing: bad obviously becasue the lock isn't solid but good becasue if the 4-track has really bad variances in it's playback speed the slave device sort of ignores them (and simultaneously looses lock!).

Now here's the thing: either record everything to the compy and call it a day, or record your "analog critical" tracks to the 4-track and fly them into the compy all four at once, and don't look back. The problem with the "analog critical" deal is that most stuff that sounds good on analog isn't what you'd record first- guitars, bass, etc. Now, if you had a way to generate SMPTE timecode, you ~could~ slave your computer to your 4-track and use the 4-track as 3 analog tracks sync'ed with your computer. I've got a buddy that records that way. It hardly seems worth it for three tracks but hey... each to his own.

Forget about FSK though- that's really only good for talking dollies from the '70's.

Huh?

Ok, as an aside, I did a project for Halloween... my wife found this talking doll. The original idea was that the doll would lay in it's crib with it's mouth moving and look scary. The moving mouth part was broken so I opened it up... guess what? The thing was a glorified cassette player. The cassette was a continuous loop deal, like an answering machine. On one track was the doll's voice... and the other... FSK!!! Ya, you got it. The FSK signals were keying the doll's mouth to open and close based on where the doll's voice tape was. Kewl, huh? So, clever me, I dubbed all these horrible sounding demonic pitch-shifted voices on the audio track and FSK on the other- so the dolly looked like some possesed demonchild with mouth moving and the whole bit. True story!!
