I'd at least have a go at it where you are now, for a few reasons:

1) you'll know whether MIDI sync is going to happen for you or not.

2) you'll have a benchmark to work against when you go look at soundcards.

3) you'll appreciate it more when you get a good soundcard!!

4) it's something you can do right now, with less than $100 and possibly no money invested whatsoever.

Personally, i'd shoot for a long term goal of getting a better soundcard and dedicated computer. I wouldn't necessarily shoot for 8 ins, but at least four in's would be good. As a short term goal i'd work with what you have now just to see if DAW (computer= Digital Audio Workstation) is the way you want to go.

You'll need to buy/obtain/whatever lots of plugins to do your mixing on the computer. If you intend to do realtime processing with direct x plugins you'll need some serious CPU horsepower. There are workarounds for that... we'll talk more later. For now start readin' that manual!!
