I don't know if he did the "Justice for all" album,
but I always thought the kick drum on that record
was just plain ridiculus sounding. It had more
high end than the snare did. Living Color was
another band with dreadful sounding drums. I think
some of those 80's drum sounds, the gated snares
and such, were done just because they could be.
The technology was new and expensive so people
thought it must be good. In the early days of
digital reverb, Big arena sounds are what they did
well. Its only been in recent years that effects
boxes have really started to sound good with
smaller "ambient" sounds. I have lots of stuff
that I recorded in the late 80's, early 90's
that I can barely listen to now because of
the really cheesy drum samples. I sometimes
wonder what was I thinking?
