Didn't see a rig like that on the video... doesn't mean they didn't do it though. Wasn't Bob a drummer in a past life? That would explain why he's so anal about drum sounds.
I did see a spot in the video where they were splicing drum tracks on 2" 24 track though. YIKES!
I do almost exactly that, to fatten kicks. Actually, I am compensating for the lack of a great kick mic (can't afford one right now). I hook an old Tama analog drum synth module to the insert on the kick track (but only the first click on the Mackie which makes a mult) and then mix the return from the module with the recorded sound. The module is tuned to give more sub-bass and the "high Q" click on top. I can even make credible TR808/909 ba- woooooooommmmmmm sounds with it!
