Ya, that Bob Rock dude talked about his 'black' album drums in Mix magazine or something (I forget which cause I tossed it out a while back). It went like this:
The kick drum is an anal science with him. He spends a bunch of time tuning the drum, then builds a 10ft carpet tunnel which basically extends the drum. At the end of the tunnel he puts a condenser (I think I said C12). Then he mics the front head, then the back head, and I think one inside. I don't remember, just a buttload of mics. Anyhow, then he said he likes the low end steady and predictable. So he cuts some lows on the mics and triggers some low sample tones.
So the mids and top end of the kick are real... but the very bottom is a synth tone or something. Probably a 90hz one and another down at 45hz. Because if you listen to Black on a insanely expensive car stereo with one of those huge subwoofers you'll notice an almost hip-hop type sub-sonic synth-bass movement down there... that's the sample moving in time with the kick.
