Okey. That makes good sense.

the expensive solution would be an 8in-8out card.

it would save you loads of time transferring tracks, and you'll have no problem recording a full band composition- 8 ins= kick-snare-overhead L- overhead R- and four more tracks for everyone else. Or, use two of the four tracks for tom mics and the last two tracks for vox and music scratch tracks.

If you want to go cheap you could get a card with less in's and transfer tracks two or four at a time depending on how many in's you need. The trick is, before you start recording with your MD, arm all tracks to record. Then record a slate tone- could be a stick click, anything. Be sure it has a fast attack though. So what you're doing in this case is recording the same click to all tracks simultaneously. Then, you record your part... then transfer to computer. You just record the tracks in and after recording you can zoom into the waveform as closely as possible and nudge a track the starts late or early into position visually. I've done this with ADAT transfers before and it works very well... if you're careful and a little patient.

This doesn't work as well with tape, BTW.. the normal innacurices in playback speed won't really allow for it. It's not that it CAN'T be done, it's just a lot harder. With a digital source it's not a problem.
