Right exactly. With muddy mixes this is usually the culprit. I think of it this way: when a band plays live in a room and you listen... well every instrument is putting out some lows. Kick is, bass is, guitar is. But whatever puts out the *most* lows is what dominates the low end. Usually bass and kick. So when mixing an ok shortcut is just to cut *all* the lows in the guitars and vox... and let the drum & bass jam give the power. The guitars will still seem powerful anyhow if the drums/bass are rocking, and at least the mix won't be a muddy mess.

On the other hand, to make all instruments put out at least *some* low end (although there will be one low-end-dominator) is a more natural thing... but it's a bitch and half to pull off. It's tough to keep it from being a mud bath. I think a great arrangement of the low-mids is the sign of a great mixer. That area is just really tough to do right. Sometimes I put some 250hz on the guitar but much lower gets dangerous.
