Don't forget about lightpipe!!

All the lightpipe cards will take 8 lightpipe channels, and an external convertor will put you in business.

I think Frontier makes an 8 analog in card as well as a lightpipe card.

Also, Alesis (arrg) makes the PCR (ADAT/Edit) which features 8 channels of lightpipe I/O... you'll need an external convertor for this one- Alesis makes one called the AI-1 for around $300 and the PCR would cost another $300.

I suspect that your MD player will rapidly become obsolete if you start tracking on the computer. Too bad you can't sync it to the computer somehow.

Layla's OK- it's sure cheaper than some other options. You might have problems with the Layla and AMD, you might not. They work very well. The reason a lot of folks think that they have reliability problems is that there are SO MANY out there and you see people posting with problems all the time. The noisy transformer problems have recently been corrected, apparently.

The Aardvark card is OK, but I have heard of some compatability problems. Also, the convertors aren't very good (maybe a little worse than Layla's, better than the Alesis AI-1, a little worse than MOTU).

The MOTU is the choice of the largest group of professionals; but be forwarned! MOTU are an admitted group of PC-haters and their support is HORRIBLE. The 2408 has some really outstanding features that some others don't but also costs more.

Have you considered attempting to sync the MD unit and compy? You'd need less I/O if you could.

Have you considered moving four tracks out at a time instead of all eight? You can re-align them on the DAW if need be. You'll save a ton of money if you go with a 4-in or 2-in card as opposed to an 8-in card, and you'll have more choices.

Why wouldn't you track to the DAW anyway- if you're going to go to the expense of buying an 8-in card? You'll get a better overall sound!
