An SM57 will likely solve your problems, and they're cheap enough and nearly indestructable, so get one and go to it.
If you don't have the $60-90 for one, borrow one... SOMEBODY you know has one, I guarantee it!
Do the speakers themselves buzz?? It's always helpful to go through each speaker to find the best one.
12 inches away sounds OK, but close sounds meatier.
Also, for low end chunk backmic the cab and combine the signal with the close mic on the front. If your cab back is off or you mic a combo use 2 57's- one on the front and one on the back and out of phase with the front.
It is nearly impossible to get a bad crunch sound with a 5150/4x12/SM57 closemic'ed. The 5150 is one of my favorite heads, BTW... go easy on the gain when you're recording with that one, maybe back off a click or so, it WILL get a little buzzy with the right tubes (wrong tubes?) and gain on 10.
