Mark,
I'm a guitarist who records on my PC. I have a Soundblaster live value soundcard($100)stereo in/out.It's software bundle includes a internal pc mixer(midi, line in, mike,output,cd,etc..)a decent onboard synth, wav editor, rythmania(programable sequencer, groove maker)4 channel surround(for the kids games).A 4 point powered speaker w/sub that cost $100.I use Cakewalk Guitar Studio 1 ($150). It allows 8 tracks audio/16 tracks Midi. It sounds great and is pretty easy to learn(my 13 yr old records stuff all the time).Dell has machines can be had with sblive soundcards .If you don't have much computer exp.,soundcards can be a real bitch to configure. For a few hundred bucks in software, you can find out if pc recording is for you, learn about you cd burner with few components to hook up wrong, configure, etc... You can always buy a 2nd sound card later and use the sblive for windows.
Have fun and good luck,
moe6string
