The VS880 is definitely a better machine, but I think the D8 will serve my brother's needs.He'll only be doing a capella stuff (he doesn't even have a drum machine) with one mike (which I'll also be getting for him), so being able to record only 2 tracks at a time shouldn't be a big deal. Also, he's new to recording, so I don't want to get anything that's too complicated to use (and the popular consensus is that the VS series is difficult to use). If my brother doesn't hit the ground running, he may lose interest. He doesn't necessarily need a machine that he can grow with; he's graduating from law school and he already has a high five-figure job. If he gets really into recording, I figure he can buy a better machine himself.
