I own a tascam 488MKII and it gives me plenty of great recordings.I too was aslo considering the Yamaha Mini Disc recorder thats out. After weighing everything out I went with the Cassette. The yamaha uses a different type of Mindisc than the Mini disc you use in a normal minidisc recorder. It has to use the "Data" Mini Disc,Which have more memory and cost about $18 dollars a peice. And you only get about 18 minutes of 8-track recording on just one of them.If you use some good outboard gear like an Alesis Compressor w/Noise gate when you lay down a track like a piano or something that has to have a some headroom you'll be just fine with the tascam cassette. For the money and the economics of cassettes over The Data mini disc I would go with the Tascam. There is absolutely no High end signal loss on the cassette Multi-track(Contrary to popular beleif).Even when Bouncing tracks,if you take your time and Learn the subtlties of the Tascam you can get great recordings.I bought mine at AMS for $899.00.they have some left right now. They also have the Yamaha if thats what you decide to go with for about $1099.00. You can check them out on the web if you dont already know about them. http://www.americanmusical.com/home.htm
Hope this helps in some way~~~
