I can see a few things that MIGHT be wrong with the vf-16. First,
it doesn't have pan knobs like the DPS12 (inessential,
but nicer than doing it through the screen). Also,
from reading the press release, I can't tell if it
comes with a hard drive or not. It kind of sounds
like it doesn't. Finally, a major reason I got the
DPS12 was that I could buy a CDRW drive for $150
and burn audio cd's. I assume the Fostex can't do
this. It seem like they would be pushing such a feature
if it existed. The vf-16 does cost the same
as the DPS12 and it can record four more tracks, but
I'll have to wait for more info to decide if it's
actually better in a way that's meaningful for me.

PS. Oh, I just thought of something. The vf-16 has
eq and compression (which is a really awesome idea),
for each channel, but it remains to be seen how they
can be applied. For example, assuming each compressor
is independent, you might only be able to use the
compressor on a certain number of channels at a time
(like how you can only use the 3-band eq on a certain
number of channels at a time on the DPS12). This
probably wouldn't be a big deal (I would probably
never want to compress more than 4 channels anyway),
but it's something to think about.
