Compare CD specs with 1/2" 8-track
CD: 96dB SN ratio, response 20Hz-20KHz +- 1/2dB (aprox) 22KHz -50dB (educated guess). peak distortion less than .01%. Amplitude distortion bd 11KHz -+3dB
1/2": 108dB SN ratio with DBX, response, 40Hz-18Khz +- 1dB, 24KHz +-2dB (I don't have equipment that can test beyond this but an educated guess would be 30KHz -50dB), peak distortion 1%, amplitude distorion bd11KHz +- 1dB
Most of these specs are approximations. The amplitude distortion is not normally tested but I thought it brought up an interesting comparison. The explaination of this distortion is a pulsing in amplitude that ocurres at certain frequencies, primarily close to multipals of 2 to the sampling rate. In analogue it is cause by head bumps and wow/flutter which normally cancels itself out on playback but not always particularly dealing with flutter. Also, the SN ratio for Cd is a false # b/c CD have no noise but the distortion from qualtization is percieved as noise.
