anytime you sync tape machines it's a pain in the butt. since you're doing the HD route, you shouldn't see any real problems. the fd4 is a good route for extra tracks. I think I saw them in the Musicians' Friend catalog going for hundreds less than the top end tascam 4 tracker.
MTC (Midi Time Code) works like any other time code for syncing. One machine generates or plays back the sync signal (master) and another machine reads and follows the sync signal (slave).
