Looking for info on MTC

My recorder is an Akai DPS12 and I'm thinking of adding a Fostex FD4 since they are real cheap. My reasoning is I would have 4 more tracks and more importantly, more effects routing options. I would have to sync them using MTC, and right now I'm talking over my head (MTC?). Anyway, is this a reliable way of recording, or am I asking for trouble expecting 2 machines to sync. My experience in the past has been watching people try to get 2 dat machines of the same model, but a different "version" to sync, and being very frustrated starting and stopping. Any info is appreciated.
